Baby's Sleep Checklist for the Cold Season

Baby's Sleep Checklist for the Cold Season

With our winter sleep checklist, you can keep your baby warm and ready for bed this winter. In this article, we'll go over how to clothe your baby for sleep in the cold, crib safety, and sleep advice.

What should babies wear to bed in the winter?

When the temperatures dip, it's tempting to wrap your newborn in layers, but this is neither safe nor comforting for them. Babies and newborns cannot regulate their body temperatures like adults, so the easiest method to tell if they're too hot or too cold is to check the nape of their neck. We recommend wearing your kid in two layers to make them comfortable during naps and at night. You'll learn about the first layer, the foundation layer, and the second layer, the outer layer, in this section.

Bodysuits and Long Sleeve Onesies

You can outfit your kid in Bodysuits and Long Sleeve Onesies for the first layer. Onesies and bodysuits made of breathable fabrics such as GOTS certified organic cotton and bamboo are recommended. Footed onesies may be preferable in the cold. On colder evenings, footed onesies keep your baby's feet toasty. We created our footed sleepers with rubber grip soles for 6-12 month walkers and climbers to keep them from slipping while they explore their world.

Wearable blankets are newborn and baby sleeping bags that keep your baby safe, warm, and comfy while they sleep. Swaddle sleep bags, sleep bags, and footed sleep bags are examples of these (previously called sleep suits). The INFANSY’s good night blanket, which includes secure, wearable blankets, is intended to grow with your kid.

Swaddle sleep bags are designed for newborns and babies up to the age of six months. When a baby is born, he or she still has the Moro reflex, often known as the natural startle reflex. This is your baby's reaction to loud noises or motions. You'll notice your child arch their back, stiffen their bodies, fling their arms up, and flinch. Swaddling properly can help minimize their natural startle reflex, make them more comfortable, and aid in their sleep.

When your baby outgrows their startle reflex, which happens around 6 months of age, you'll need to stop swaddling them and move to sleep sacks to keep them safe. Sleep sacks are fantastic because they prevent your baby from kicking off their covers in the middle of the night. These come in sleeveless, long sleeve, and removable sleeves.

The Flip Flopper is the next stage in our sleep system. This is the stage at which your babies become more active. Footed sleep bags, also known as sleep suits, are wearable blankets with feet that allow your baby to move freely and are a safer alternative to sleep bags. These are loose enough to be comfortable but tight enough to keep you secure, and they can be worn over PJs or a sleeper.

When the temperature drops, look for a wearable blanket with a higher TOG. A few factors influence the appropriate TOG. To learn more about winter TOGs, visit our blog. In general, you can select a TOG based merely on the temperature of your baby's sleeping space:

  • TOG is suited for year-round or warmer spaces with temperatures ranging from 20 to 24°C (69 to 74°F).
  • 5 TOG is a medium-heavy weight that is suited for rooms ranging from 16 to 20°C (61 to 68°F).
  • 5 TOG is a heavy weight that is excellent for cold rooms with temperatures ranging from 10 to 16°C (31°F).

Nest Designs employs warmer, breathable fabrics throughout the winter, such as certified organic cotton, bamboo, bamboo blended wool, and Sorona®, which keep your baby toasty and warm, are soft on your baby's skin, and are environmentally friendly.

How to Winter-Proof a Baby's Crib

It's tempting to fill our baby's crib with adorable plush animals, blankets, bumpers, cushions, and other items, but it's not the safest option. The Canadian Pediatric Society and the Public Health Agency of Canada advocate keeping your baby's sleeping environment uncomplicated, with a firm mattress and a fitted crib sheet.

You can safely introduce a lovey once your baby turns one. A quilted crib blanket and cushion can be introduced around 18 months of age, or whenever you believe your child is ready.
